Rich Rivera spent so much time helping companies
handle their information technology (IT) and communications networks, he
forgot about helping himself.
“I got to the point where I felt like I was helping everybody else,”
said Rivera, “but not myself and my family.”
As a talented young IT professional, bouncing around between companies
like AT&T, Lucent Technologies and Nortel Systems, Rivera decided it was
time to make his own way.
He took what he had learned during his professional and academic career,
and set out on his own. But things didn’t move at broadband speeds,
instead, nearly three years after starting Eye Virtual, a full service
IT company, Rivera was still working for other companies, while his own
grew at a dial up pace.
Rivera wanted to be a provider of a full range of IT services for
operations too small or understaffed to adequately handle the often
staggering load of tech work involved with the modern business, but, he
needed a little help. He knew the technical side well, but running the
business posed some problems.
Rivera then met Liam Dillon, owner of PADGETT BUSINESS SERVICES® in San
Antonio, through a mutual acquaintance. He was curious about Dillon’s
services, and met with him to discuss his options.
“I told Liam I was not going back. I had to make this work,” said
Rivera. “He really helped me out with the operational side of things.”
That was more than six months ago, and already, Eye Virtual has taken
off. Rivera, president of the company, has now opened satellite offices
in Dallas, San Francisco, and has plans for a fourth office in New York.
“I look at Liam as a partner in our operations as we continue to grow,”
said Rivera.
Dillon has helped Rivera by ensuring that all of the proper state and
federal level certificates and licenses were acquired, and by offering
sound business advice, like where to buy insurance for and how to handle
state sales taxes.
Rivera said that as the business continues to grow, he will likely
expand Dillon’s role as an operational partner by adding services like
monthly financial reporting and by taking advantage of the payroll
solutions offered by Padgett.
“Going from an employee to the President of your own company is a huge
change in so many areas,” said Dillon. “By working with Padgett, Rich
was able to make this transition a little smoother, because we were
there to answer his questions and help him make the right decisions.”
Rivera seconds that. “I really value his opinion,” he said.
